giving & receiving

Most people grew up with the familiar saying, “It is better to give than to receive”; however, very few people understand how this adage is blocking abundance from their lives.

Is it really better to give than it is to receive? The answer for me is NO! I say this for two reasons.

First of al, if you have this belief, you are probably blocking abundance from flowing into you life, and this is occurring because you have a hard time receiving.  Think about it.  How many times have you turned down compliments for something you did?  Did you say something like “oh, it was nothing”?  Or if a friend wants to compensate you for something you did for them, how often do you say “No, I couldn’t possibly accept you money or gift.”  Have many times have seen a penny on the ground and refused to pick it up?

If any of these examples sound familiar, you may be blocking your abundance.  If you refuse to receive what another person or the Universe is offering you, you are dishonoring that person because you are blocking his or her ability to give.  If you consistently refuse to pick up pennies off the ground the Universe offers, you are training the Universe not to give it to you because a penny is money and it no different than a million dollars to the Universe.

Second of all, in order for you or someone to give, there must be a receiver to accept what is given because giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin and both are required.  You can not have one without the other, and one is not better than the other.

Therefore, if you intend to live a prosperous life, you must be an excellent giver and an excellent receiver, and this is one of the primary differences between prosperous people and poor people.

Prosperous people are excellent receivers.
Poor people are poor receivers.

This is not a criticism of poor people because poor people (people who have a low level of prosperity) are not less intelligent, less capable, or even less motivated than prosperous people.  They just are not open to the possibilities around them, and they are blocking the abundance from their lives. Without taking advantage of opportunities, it’s nearly impossible to grow and experience greater levels of prosperity in life.

So why, then, are most people poor receivers?

It occurs because they have accepted this meme that “it is better to give than receive”.  A meme is like a mind virus that spreads easily from person to person and affects the level of prosperity and abundance that you experience.  But if you trace this meme back to its original translation, you may be amazed what it really said.  The real adage before it was changed to the current day translation was:

It is better to be in a position to give than in a position to have to receive.

The original adage changes the whole meaning of the meme, “it is better to give than receive”.  Therefore, if you were inflected with this meme (limiting belief), you have been conditioned not to receive; however, you can reprogram you subconscious mind to willingly receive everything that comes into your life.  By everything, I mean all the events and circumstances in our lives, even though that you designate as “bad”.

To reprogram yourself, do the following:

Using your closed hand, rub over your heart center in the middle of your chest in a clockwise motion, and repeat the following declaration:

I am choosing to an excellent giver and an excellent receiver.

Repeat this reprogramming technique through out the day until you subconscious mind has accepted this truth.

By reprogramming yourself to receive, you open yourself to the blessings of God (Universe) and allow abundance to flow into your life.

At the same time, continue to give unconditionally and with love because what you gives return back to you multiplied.  Don’t just give money, but give of your time, energy, resources, knowledge, skills, and/or talents.  I believe the more you give, the more you receive, and this is based on the universal Law of Giving and Receiving.

The Law of Giving and Receiving is one the greatest laws that you can implement to manifest prosperity when you consciously use it.  If you wish to receive anything in your life, you first need to give it unconditionally from the heart.  At the same time, you must be open to receiving it.  Many times it will come from a different source than what you gave and it may come in a different form than you expect, but it will be returned.  This law is based on spiritual and scientific teachings and principles.

From the spiritual teaching, the Law of Giving and Receiving is demonstrated as follows:

Whatever you sow (meaning whatever you plant, disseminate, disperse, or put out), you will also reap (meaning you will also receive, gain, harvest, accumulate, or get back). - Galatians 6:7

From the scientific teaching, the Law of Giving and Receiving is demonstrated as follows:
For every action (meaning for everything you do, every act, effort, or transaction), there will always be an equal or even opposite reaction (meaning there will be cause and effect or consequences and/or repercussions). -Isaac Newton’s Law of Motion.

So Give. Give. Give. And do so cheerfully and unconditionally.  It is the energy behind the giving that matters so do not give grudgingly. The Law of Giving and Receiving guarantees that you shall receive plenty for what you give if you are open to receiving it.

Now there are some people who resist giving freely.  Often some people decide not to give because they believe they do not have enough to give. They feel that if they give, they will have nothing left.  This type of belief comes from a poverty consciousness.

From a spiritual perspective, if you do not sow, you will not reap.  How can you receive what you desire, if you never give anything, and how can you receive anything if you are not open to receiving it?

From the scientific perspective, if you do nothing, nothing will happen. You must take action for something to occur because we live in a cause and effect world.

If you decide not to give for fear that there is not enough or fear of loss, you will never really experience the free flowing abundance in your life, whether it is money, joy, peace of mind, love, anything else you truly desire.

So, let today be the day that you change your level of prosperity by transforming your thoughts and renewing your mind.  Open you heart to give freely and transform the mind to receive abundantly.  When you do, you will experience a liberating awareness of abundance flowing in your life.  You realize that you can give freely without fear of ever over extending yourself or experiencing lack and scarcity because you will experience joy, love, inner peace, and an increased level of prosperity.

Personal Development is something I have been passionate about since I was a teenager; however, my own healing journey started about 8 years ago, was when I began to discover the possibilities of creating my life based peace, happiness, and prosperity.  As I discovered the power within myself, I attracted people, books, and classes to aid me on my journey of healing myself and  returning to wholeness.

I began my own journey of healing when crisis had struck me in my life after going nearly financially destitute.  Everything I thought myself to be was taken out from under me, and I had no idea who I was.

In the beginning of my journey, I was searching for the secrets to being financially free and successful.  I read books and listened to tapes on visualization, goal setting, and using affirmations, but I was not getting the results I wanted.  As time went on, I became depressed, angry, and frustrated with the world.   As a way of protecting myself from feelings of my financial “failure”, I suppressed the pain of my emotions, but all that changed when I was introduced to a process that transformed my reality.

At the time I was a working as an insurance agent, and one of my clients who was training to be an energy therapist asked if she could demonstrate a process that would release my anger and frustration.  At first I was skeptical, but I was very amazed by the process after using it.  As she continued with the process, I began to access the repressed emotional pain and release it.  Immediately I began to feel shifts take place in my body and my mind.  During that initial session, I discovered limiting beliefs of being “undeserving and unloved” stemming from a my childhood.  I saw how these beliefs had literally controlled my life and stopped me many times from going after what I wanted.

With this process, I was able to reframe and create my new identity by changing the way I looked at myself and the world.  I received many new perceptions about myself and the world, and I was able to see the lessons I needed to learn to awaken.

What was this amazing process that allowed me to easily release my suppressed emotions?  It is called Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT.

What is  EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques is an Energy Psychology process developed by Gary Craig, a personal performance coach in California, that uses the ancient Chinese meridian system to eliminate all kinds of emotional, mental, physical and spiritual discomfort.

If you are familiar with acupuncture, you know that the body is made of a system of meridians.  The meridian system was mapped out by the Chinese over 4000 years ago and is the basis of all acupuncture treatment.  Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) use the same wiring as acupuncture except there are no needles; instead you tap with your fingertips on some of the acupuncture meridian points.

The theory of Emotional Freedom Techniques is that the cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system.

Strong negative emotions cause a shock in our systems, creating the equivalent of a short circuit in our energy system.  Strong emotions can be triggered by a thought, a memory, or an event (depending on how you think about the event). For instance, if you think about how angry you are that your spouse yelled at you, you may feel tension in your body.

Once there is a build-up of emotional or psychological distress, one of these pathways or meridians becomes blocked and must be cleared or aligned in order for healing to occur.  Using EFT, you can balance the energy system which stops the power of that thought from affecting your body in that way.  .  Once the energy circuits (meridians) are then realigned, balance to the energy system is restored.  You may still have the thought and the memory of what occurred, but  without the emotional intensity that the thought was associated with. You are then much more able to think about the event differently.  Your thoughts become more flexible.

While the theory may not make much sense to you, what I know is that EFT works.-  often quickly, and often dramatically. I have seen this with my own eyes over and over again.

EFT has been proven clinically effective as a simple yet powerful way of  releasing fears, phobias, anxieties, angers, addictions, and all kinds of emotional and physical issues.  This is a new paradigm in healing because it no longer takes months or years of therapy and boxes of tissues to resolve problems. With EFT, specific issues can often be dissolved in minutes - forever!

The beauty of EFT is that ANYONE can learn how to apply it on themselves.  It is  painless and harmless, and it is completely safe, simple and easy to use.

Each of us has a set of beliefs about ourselves that we have come to accept and own.  This set of beliefs constitutes our Belief System (BS), and it is so powerful that is the foundation of what you experience in life.  Your belief system is multifaceted and covers just about anything and everything we experience.  You have beliefs about who you believe you are, money, politics, relationships, God, physical health, and success to name a few.

You have other beliefs that are a part of the collective consciousness / mass consciousness.  This collection of beliefs cover such things as work (the Protestant work ethic), about intolerance of “bad” behavior, patriotism, tradition, etc.  These types of beliefs control how we function in society and pressure us to conform to a norm.  There is the exhortation to defend a host of ideas such as honor, good name, mother, family, country, the faith and more.  Then there are pressures to be politically one way or another, to criticize secularism, conservatism or liberalism as evil, to stand up for what is right, and to stand on principle.

What Are Beliefs

Your beliefs are unconscious mental conclusions that we have taken as absolute truth, and they have tremendous power over the quality of your entire life.  Even if what you believe is true, false, painful, or not relevant to who you are now,  your beliefs cause you to perceive the world in a way that is unique to you, and assist in the creation of your individual reality.

A major part of your Belief System (BS) that affects your experiences in life is what you believe about money.  Although money is a necessary tool in our society, many people scorn at the mere mention of it.  Believe it or not, many people  prefer to discuss their sex lives rather than discuss the subject of money.  Other people believe that making or having an abundance of money is not a good thing.  How many times have you heard people say “Money isn’t everything” or “Money is the root of all evil”?  Well, for these people, they are right; at least for them.  Although, they truly believe these statements, most people never examine what they believe or why they believe it.

For centuries, most people believed that the Earth was flat, and you would fall off the edge if you traveled the end of it.  People were trapped.  As a result, they were stuck in a world that reached out only as far as they could see.  They were stuck not because that was all that they had available to them, but because that’s all they “believed” they had.  But it was an illusionary reality that  was created by their beliefs.

They firmly held on to this belief until one day Christopher Columbus proved them wrong by sailing around the world.  And in doing so, he opened up a whole new world of possibilities and opportunities for everyone.  As a result, the rest of the planet became available to them.

Your Belief System (B.S.) is a funny creature in that it is not necessarily based on what’s true or factual in the world.  Your beliefs are formed from what you heard, observed, or have been taught.  The power of each belief comes only from the believer of that belief, and the strength of your belief depends on how strongly you believe it to be true.

Your Core Beliefs

You learned many of our core beliefs about yourself and what you could expect from the world during your childhood.  A core belief is something that you accepted without question at an early age.  Therefore, it continues to be reinforced by your observations and perceptions of your experiences.

From birth, you were programmed about money by your parents, siblings, friends, teachers, the media, religious leaders, social clubs and stratification of societies, nationality, race, language, dialects, and sex.  Your mind was like a little sponge accepting as truth practically everything you heard and observed from authority figures, and as adults, most people are not aware that their beliefs shape their lives.

For most people, their childhood programming about money was mostly negative; as a result, many people have come to believe at some very deep level that they are not “good enough” or they may not be “worthy”.  Your money beliefs can keep you locked in a mental prison of unhappiness and financial mediocrity.  Furthermore, your money beliefs dictate if you will be financial abundant or not because they create a filter which directs all of your decisions you make and actions you take which have a direct effect on the results you get in your life.

I call these types of beliefs, limiting beliefs.

Limiting beliefs are metal blocks stored in your subconscious mind that stops you from having the financial success you want and deserve in your life.  It may be something you do out of habit without thinking about it, or it may be a reason you have, where you say “I can’t be/do/have that because…”   Like many people, you may have acquired some very unhelpful, unsupportive beliefs over the years, especially around how deserving (or not) you believe you are of money and even about your health, weight, and your worthiness to have passionate, loving relationships.

Here are some examples of limiting beliefs:

Money doesn’t grow on trees!

Don’t waste your hard-earned money!

You can’t be rich and spiritual!

I can’t afford it!

Money is power!

Never mix business with pleasure!

Another day, another dollar!

It’s all in a day’s work!

You get what you pay for!

Why don’t you get a real job?

Save for a rainy day!

I will never have enough money!

I’ll probably just fail anyway!

Rich people are greedy and dishonest!

If I’m successful, my friends will be jealous and stop liking me!

I’ll get my reward in “heaven”!

I’m not smart enough to earn more money!

I have to work harder if I want to earn more money!

It takes money to make money!

Do any of these beliefs sound familiar to you?

The list of limiting money beliefs can continue to fill several pages because most people have hundreds or even thousands of limiting money beliefs which blocks the flow of financial abundance from flowing into their lives.  You may not know this yet, but your money beliefs are the blueprint for your financial results, and they will determine your level of financial prosperity you choose and are willing to accept into your life.  As I stated earlier, most people never do any critical thinking to investigate what they believe and why they believe it.  If they did, most would be surprised what they found.

Now, if you have limiting money beliefs in you subconscious mind, you can transform them into more positive beliefs, which then supports you in being the person who is living a financial prosperous life.

For example:

There is an infinite amount of wealth me to tap into, and it flows in my life constantly.

I can do what I love, and earn money doing it.

I can always afford whatever I desire or need.

Money is easy to earn.

I can be rich, and I can be Zen (spiritual).

Now, you are entitled to your beliefs, but let me ask you a question.  How have your beliefs about money been working out for you so far?

If you are not experiencing a life full of financial abundance and prosperity, then I invite you to examine your beliefs you hold about money.  Are you willing to give up old, non-supportive beliefs that do NOT serve you in order to live a financial prosperous life?

Uncovering Your Hidden Beliefs

To do this, you’re going to need to identify your hidden money beliefs and transform them.  Most people say, “If my beliefs are hidden, how do I know what they are?”

One method you can use to identify your hidden limiting beliefs about money is by looking at the difference between your desires and your current results.  For example, if you truly desire to have a new Cadillac, but you’re driving a 10 year old, beat up old Ford, then you have one or more limiting beliefs in your subconscious mind that blocks the Cadillac BMW from your life.

Action Item: Limiting Beliefs

To discover this belief or beliefs, perform the following exercise.  Get a sheet of paper and draw a vertical line down the center of the page to create two columns.  In the left column, write your desire.  In the right column, right the reason why you don’t have it.
For example:

What I Desire Why I Don’t Have It
2009 Cadillac STS I can’t afford that car. This is a car for a rich person, and I am not rich.I don’t deserve a car like this!

My parents will think I am wasting my money if I purchased this car.

My friends will think I am trying to be better than them.

Once you identify your limiting beliefs, you need to transform them into positive beliefs that will support you in HAVING your desires.  To transform your limiting beliefs can be as simple as deciding one day that a particular belief no longer serves you, and then choose a new belief to replace it.  For instance, for most of my adult life I held onto the hidden belief that rich people were bad.  Since I considered myself a good person, I made sure I wouldn’t become wealthy by sabotaging my actions to having an abundance of money in my life.  But when I really examined this belief, I found that some poor people behave badly too.  Therefore, I concluded that being bad didn’t have anything to do with the amount of money you have in your life.  Rather it is the attitudes of the people that determine their behavior, so I transformed this belief to rich people are great contributors because they provide a lot of value to the world.

Another limiting belief about money that I had was that it took hard work to make money.  After examining this belief, I concluded if hard work guaranteed financial success, then all construction workers would be wealthy.  After all, these people work really hard and long hours, but most of these workers are far from being wealthy.  If you are working hard and working long hours on your job, are you wealthy yet or are you still trapped in the “rat race”?   This limiting belief has been passed down from generation to generation, but do you see the fallacy in this belief?

Transforming your limiting beliefs can take some time and diligent effort, but it’s absolutely achievable.  I did it, and thousands of other people who living a financial prosperous life did it.  Now, the process of overcoming your limiting beliefs is like peeling off the layers of an onion.  As you peel off the layers, you will begin to manifest more and more of your desires.  The better you get at this, the more powerful your manifesting muscles will become.  And the more powerful you believe you are, the more your mind will open up to your greatness.

I invite you to make a commitment to do the exercise to uncover and transform your limiting money beliefs.  By doing this, you are well on your way transforming your mindset and living the life you truly desire.

If you would like to accelerate the transformation of your limiting beliefs, I invite you to check out The Belief Buster Kit, which shows you EXACTLY how to do this, with over 20 exercises and techniques to identify and clear limiting beliefs and create and install new empowering beliefs in their place.
